Does anyone know of a home security system that can work without electricity or a phone line?

I am in the process of rehabbing a house, but I have been robbed twice now and really want to get a security system, but so far the electrical and phone lines haven’t been installed yet. Does anyone know of any type of alarm that would be able to work without electricity or a phone line? Maybe either battery powered or something like that… Thanks!

Even battery power, the best you’ll get is a loud noise that’s not really going to scare anyone away and can be easily turned off. Your best bet is a big mean dog.

large agressive dog does the trick

A large dog with a loud bark. I have three and the most they would do is lick a person to death, but, their barking is loud and extremely effective in terms of security.

A big, ugly, mean ol’ dog will do the trick.

You could install a standard alarm system and operate it off of battery power. There are also cellular units that work with alarm systems that would allow the system to report to an alarm center even though you don’t have a telephone line.

To get maximum battery life, I would try to use alarm detection devices such as door contact switches which don’t need power to operate instead of things like motion detectors which do need power. Although these days, there are many motion detectors that require very little power anyway.

With a larger battery, you could probably get a month or more of service before the battery needed to be recharged. Most alarm systems will give you a “trouble” indication if there is no AC power but this shouldn’t affect operation of the system.
